If you're going to build strong defenses you're going to want some strong tools to do it with. Gather resources to research smithing.
- Obtain 1 Log (0/1)

- Obtain 5 Metal Ingot (0/5)
Step 2
Metal tools can be made by smithing. Since that requires an anvil you'll need to craft a Smithy to get started.
- Craft 1 Smithy (0/1)
- Place 1 Smithy (0/1)
Step 3
Gather the resources needed to make a tool. Smelt ore into ingots at the furnace as needed.
- Craft 2 Copper or Iron Ingots
- Obtain 1 Timber (0/1)
Step 4
Add the resources to a smithy's inventory and craft a metal tool.
- Craft 1 Pickaxe or Hammer
