In survival mode, most blocks and crafting recipes are unknown to the player (locked). By selecting researches and performing the research quests, players can learn (unlock) all of the content in the game.

The research quests serve as both a means to unlock items and as a continuation of the tutorial to teach players the many features of the game. Completed research can be shared in multiplayer by crafting schematics that are also unlocked by the quests.

In creative mode, all blocks and crafting recipes are known (unlocked).
